Constitution Party backed candidate trying to get GOP nod…

A candidate who says he is backed by the Constitution Party is trying to get the Republican nomination for Congress in Texas. Trish Choate writes on GoSanAngelo.com that Michael Barrett is trying to unseat incumbent Republican Congressman Mac Thornberry. Thornberry was first elected to Congress in 1994.

Choate writes, “Michael Barrett of Nocona Hills plans to challenge Thornberry, but he’s shooting for the nomination from the Constitution Party instead of the Republican Party… Barrett, 54, said Constitution Party members approached him and have promised financial support.” Choate quotes Barrett saying the Republican party has “gone too much to the middle”.

Lou Dobbs for President?

Lou Dobbs for President? The CNN commentator left the cable broadcast network “to pursue new opportunities”. The Thirds wonders is that new “opportunity” a run for President as a Third Party candidate.

In saying goodbye to television the Dobbs message sure sounded like a speech that many people make when getting into a political race. He spoke of his accomplishments, “I'm the last of the original anchors here on CNN, and I'm proud to have had the privilege of helping to build the world's first news network.”

But then he talks of something bigger than himself, “Over the past six months, it's become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country and affecting all of us.”

Then he follows by saying what he will do is not a personal call, but a call from others. Dobbs said, “…some leaders in media, politics and business have been urging me to go beyond the role here at CNN and to engage in constructive problem-solving, as well as to contribute positively to a better understanding of the great issues of our day.”

He then sets-up the important issues of this time in American history and his possible campaign, “I truly believe that the major issues of our time include the growth of our middle class, the creation of more jobs, health care, immigration policy, the environment, climate change, and our military involvement, of course, in Afghanistan and Iraq…. our now weakened capitalist economy… the lack of true representation in Washington, D.C.”

He says what is wrong in Washington and why the issues previously mentioned need to be fixed, “these issues are now defined in the public arena by partisanship and ideology rather than by rigorous empirical thought and forthright analysis and discussion.”

So what is he going to do next? Dobbs told the audience, “I'll be working diligently… the important work of restoring inspiration to our great free society and our market economy, I will strive as well to be a leader in that national conversation.”

Of course we are not making any ground breaking statements by saying that Dobbs could be a presidential contender. There are two websites “loudobbs4president.com” and “loudobbsforpresident.org” that have been encouraging a Dobbs run for President.

With the political landscape skewed to the Democrats and Republicans it might take three years to get ballot access in a number of states to make a Third Party presidential run truly viable. This ballot access issues has been mentioned a number of time by possible Third Party candidates such as Jesse Ventura. Dobbs can also start his run for President with a solid base from the websites asking him to run, plus many Tea Party members would support a fiscally conservative third party option.

Would Dobbs be interested to run on the Constitution Party or Libertarian Party party-line to get a jump start on ballot access or would he look to be more independent than that? We’ll have to wait and see.

Now to de-bunk the theory completely there has been some talk that Dobbs could bolt to Fox Business Channel. But, a spokesman for Fox Business says there has been no talks between Dobbs and Fox Business.

America's Independent Party makes an early backing for Illinois Governor…

America's Independent Party Chairman Tom Hoefling announced on his party’s website that they “enthusiastically endorse” Randy Stufflebeam of the Constitution Party for Governor of Illinois.

Hoefling compared Stufflebam to President Regan and ended by saying, “we urge all Illinoisans to lend their prayers, time, energy, financial resources, and VOTES to Randy and his campaign. Do your state, and our nation, a huge favor by doing what it takes to elect Randy Stufflebeam as your Governor.”

Constitution Party making push in the South…

Members of the Constitution Party are trying to get at least 85,000 signatures so their party can be recognized on North Carlolina’s ballot.

Rachel Gallaher writes on WNCT.com the Constitution Party wants to get on the ballot by 2012. Gallaher writes the Constitution Party’s efforts to get signatures is not focusing on new members just getting people that want to see a new organization.

Could one non-answer lead to a 3rd party candidate being elected? John McCormack writes on WeeklyStandard.com that there is a possibility the Republican nominee for the New York 23rd Congressional District special election, Dede Scozzafava, could ditch the Republican party.

McCormack asked Scozzafava’s spokesman via e-mail if Scozzafava would commit to running in a Republican primary in 2010. The non-answer could chase Scozzafava waning support away. Accoring to McCormack, the spokesman answered, "Dede is focused on the election that is Nov. 3."

By not saying yes to that question, Scozzafava pretty much just said no or we’ll see. Scozzafava’s spokesman did hedge saying that they would not make any comments about the future and said Scozzafava currently "is a vote for Rep. Boehner" to be speaker of the House. Scozzafava's spokesperson later realized he stepped in it after that comment. He contacted McCormack to say Scozzafava would run in the Republican primary in 2010 if challenged. The spokesman still would not comment if Scozzafava would run as an independent if she lost the primary.

These questions of party loyalty could crush Scozzafava. Currently Scozzafava is holding onto second for dear-life in the special election. That second place standing is only because of her winning 40% of the Republican votes, according to a recent poll from Siena College.

If Scozzafava looses a number of these voters to Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman, she is finished in this race. Hoffman jumped into the race after Scozzafava was nominated by Republican party bosses. Many Republicans are supporting Hoffman because of Scozzafava's liberal-leaning voting record and beliefs.

All of the candidates in this race are currently about 10% apart.

If Scozzafava is finished in this race, could she be finished in the GOP?

According to his website, Harley Swarm Jr., is running for Minnesota Governor on the Constitution Party line.

Swarm belongs to The Sons of the American Legion, The Second Amendment Foundation, The John Birch Society, The Heritage Foundation and Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

While running for Minnesota Governor many of the issues that he focus on in his website pertain to federal issues.

Roundup: Early debate for Illinois Governor…

The election for Illinois next governor is not until 2010, but a group of six candidates gathered Friday to talk about their proposed policies. The debate was organized by the Free & Equal Elections Foundation. Codell Rodriguez of the TheSouthern.com wrote about the debate. Rodrigues wrote that, “All of the candidates agreed that Springfield isn't working right.” Here are highlights from the independent and third party candidates.

Green Party candidate Rich Whitney of Carbondale was quoted saying, “We've had year after year of smoke and mirrors." The article said Whitney focused on “overhauling the tax system to be more progressive” and education issues.

Independent Michael White of Lindenhurstand, said it is important to keep jobs and businesses in Illinois. He was quoted saying, "We have to get spending under control, no doubt about it."

Constitution Party candidate Randall Stufflebeam of Belleville, said accountability is the key thing missing in government. He said the government needs to be not be afraid of being accountable and pointed to a merit-based pay structure for teachers instead of tenure as once place that accountability could happen.

We do congratulate Republicans Adam Andrzejewski of Hinsdale and Dan Proft of Wheaton, and Democrat Bill "Dock" Walls of Chicago to be willing to sit next to these independent and third party candidates.

Three third party/independent candidates for Governor in six-way debate tonight in Illinois. The Free & Equal Elections Foundation is hosting an Illinois Gubernatorial debate at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds.

Freeandequal.org calls the debate part of, “part of the Midwest Liberty Fest.”

The candidates include Green Party Candidate Rich Whitney, Constitution Party Candidate Randall Stufflebeam, Independent Candidate Michael White.

Major party candidates include Republicans Adam Andrzejewski and Dan Proft. Democrat Bill “Dock” Walls, III is also in the debate.

Holy Father, is your socialism showing… asks the Constitution Party.

A tweet sent out by the Constitution Party read, “Pope Pushes Socialism-Calls For New World Order”. The tweet then directed readers to a New York Times article titled, “Pope Urges Forming New World Economic Order to Work for the ‘Common Good’”

The story seemed to call for at a minimum some strong world government. The piece by Rachel Donadio and Laurie Goodstein started, “Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday called for a radical rethinking of the global economy, criticizing a growing divide between rich and poor and urging the establishment of a “true world political authority” to oversee the economy and work for the “common good.””

Two-party politics: GOP vs. Constitution Party in… Virginia.

Hamptonroads.com is reporting on the race between Republican House Delegate Bob Tata and Constitution Party candidate French Mackes. According to the report, Mackes was a Republican until last year, said he offers a more fiscally and socially conservative option and that is why he joined the Constitution Party. Makes has also been endorsed by the of the fiscally conservative Independent Green Party of Virginia. This race is for the 85th house district.

But this is not the only instance of Republican versus Constitution Parties in the 2009 Virginia house races. The 18th district race features incumbent Republican Clay Athey Junior battling Constitution Party candidate Todd M. Jack.

Just a note, the 19th District race will feature Democrat and Constitution Party members running against Independent incumbent Lacey E. Putney.

Professor to run for Senate…

Professor to run for Senate… in Florida.

Marshall L. DeRosa has filed to run for U.S. Senate in Florida on the Constitution Party ticket.

The Constitution Party of Florida’s website describes DeRosa as, “..a Professor of Political Science at Florida Atlantic University. He received his Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Houston, and has taught at Louisiana State University and Davis and Elkins College. He is an adjunct faculty member for the Ludwig von Mises Institute, a Salvatori Fellow of the Heritage Foundation, and a member of the Philadelphia Society.”

DeRosa says Ron Paul’s 2008 presidential run inspired him to run for office.

Constitution Party wishes good luck for another party… the Alaskan Independence Party.

At their Constitution Party National Committee meeting in Newark, New Jersey the Constitution Party offered a congratulations to the Alaskan Independence Party on it’s 25th Anniversary.

The committee ended its congratulations resolution by saying, “we wish you continued success in the next twenty five years and trust that your best days are yet to come.”

Constitution Party takes a stand on Sonia Sotomayor for Supreme Court… No!

The Constitution Party National Committee took an offical stand against Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court of the United States of America and, “urges the US Senate to reject confirmation.”

The Constitution Party said they were against Judge Sotomayor to become a Justice because of six reasons: The reason include her 2nd amendment stands, her favoring statehood for Puerto Rico, her supports of giving voting rights to convicted murderers who are still serving time in prison, her opposition to the death penalty, that she has been a member of the National Council of La Raza, and her support of racial and ethnic quotas in education and employment.

It was one of four resolutions passed at the Constitution Party National Committee Meeting in Newark.

Third parties are no longer a waste of time…

Third parties are no longer a waste of time… is the take from Constitution Party National Committee Chairman Jim Clymer. In a news release from the party he’s quoted saying, “Voters used to think they’d be wasting their votes by voting for a third party candidate… Those days appear to be over.”

His comments were in response to former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich’s talk on voters looking beyond the “Big Box” parties of Democrats and Republicans.

Clymer said, “I ask those wondering about the third party option how long they think it will take to get the kind of government they believe in, if they keep voting for people who won’t support their views.” The news release added that Republicans are now free for the taking because they no longer have to support their candidate in the White House.

With more independent voters available Clymer says, “2012 is up for grabs!”

Green Party, Libertarians, and Constitution Party team-up...

Green Party, Libertarians, and Constitution Party team-up... The Green Party sent out a news release saying the three major third parties are teaming-up to file a federal lawsuit to challenge discriminatory provisions and enforcement of ballot access laws.

The news release says, "The Green Party of Pennsylvania is party to a lawsuit that was filed recently by the Center for Competitive Democracy."

The lawsuit challenges rules that force candidates to pay litigation costs and fees to private parties who challenge their nomination petitions. The release says, "these fees have amounted to more $80,000 for the crime of doing no more than trying to run for public office."

The news release pointed to 2006 Green Party Senatorial candidate Carl Romanelli. The release says Romanelli submitted more than 100,000 signatures to get on the ballot, “The Democratic Party challenged the signatures, and after a 7-week battle, chipped away at the Green Party signatures with technicality after technicality.” Romanelli was off the ballot and fined $80,000 in court costs. "You shouldn't have to risk house and home to run for office in Pennsylvania," said Hillary Kane, Chair of the Green Party of Pennsylvania. The release continued, “similar scenario left Independent candidate Ralph Nader… with more than $80,000 in fees from their 2004 Presidential run.”
