Green Party Congressional candidate gets Democrat endorsement

Green Party candidate for New York's 11th Congressional District, James Lane, has earned the Southern Brooklyn Democrats endorsement.

The Southern Brooklyn Democrats wrote on their Facebook Page, "Mr. Lane isn't a career politician; he's a member of our community who deeply cares about the interests of the people and representing us. It's long overdue that this district was represented by someone who is 'by the people, for the people."

Rachel Shapiro writes at silive.com Southern Brooklyn Democrats club President Jennifer Thorpe-Moscon said, "We don't blindly endorse whatever candidate the Democratic Party puts forth."

The club has a brief history of backing third-party candidates, as it endorsed Green Party candidate for governor, Howie Hawkins, in 2014 instead of Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Lane is running in a May 5 special election for Congress.

Green Party: Hillary Clinton, thank you for running!

The Green Party is saying thank you to Hillary Clinton for running for President.  An e-mail from the party said since Clinton's announcement, "We've been getting a huge influx of new supporters. The number of tweets shot up by 300%--and it's holding! We're getting a similar uptick in people joining the party".

The e-mail says people are joining because, "people are fed up... afraid... and sick and tired of having 90's-style realpolitik shoved down their throats."

The e-mail says the Greens want to "max out" on candidates for the up-coming election cycle and continue with our "aggressive ballot access work".

Green Party Congressional candidate accused of faking own mother's signature…

Green Party Congressional candidate faces ballot challenge in Illinois. James Fuller writes on DailyHerald.com, “If the challenges to Dan Kairis' nominating petitions prove true, then… [he] doesn't know his family and friends very well.”

The Green Party candidate running for Illinois’ 14th Congressional District is accused of forging signatures to get onto the ballot. Fuller writes, “rules require Kairis to have only 38 signatures from registered voters in the district to appear on the ballot. Kairis, of South Elgin, filed 62 signatures. [The] challenge is based on the validity of the bulk of those signatures.”
Candidate Kairis says every signature on his petitions is either a friend, neighbor or direct relative, but the challenger even questions if the signatures of Kairis’s son and his mother are the real deal.

The state is now comparing the signatures on the petition to signatures on voter registration cards. Even if every signature is tossed, the Illinois Green Party could still officially make Kairis their candidate and he could still run.

Third Party candidate waiting….

The Green Party candidate for Illinois Governor is waiting. Steve Rhodes writes on NBCChicago.com, “While the Democratic and Republican candidates for governor duke it out… Green Party candidate Rich Whitney lies in wait.”

The article says a win for Whitney would be unlikely, but in 2006 he did receive 10.4% of the vote. Even with that showing, Rhodes writes, “it will likely just be the Democratic nominee standing in the way (of Whitney debating).”

Whitney makes for an even more interesting candidate because his has traditionally “conservative” positions on gun control, differing from the Illinois Green Party platform.

Third Party candidate on the hook for $80k…

Third Party candidate Carl Romanelli is on the hook for $80,407. Tom Infield writes on Philly.com the Green Party candidate in Pennsylvania’s 2006 Senate race and/or his lawyer will have to pay the court that significant sum of money because he did not have enough signatures to make it onto the ballot. It appears he lost his last appeal.

Democrats challenged if Romanelli had enough real signatures on the ballot. Infield explained, “(Romanelli had) to obtain a number of signatures equal to 2 percent of the votes received by the most popular candidate in the last statewide election.” A judge ruled that Romanelli did not have enough signatures to make it onto the ballot and was tossed-off the ballot and had to pay court costs.

The Thirds believes that if Romanelli did have forged signature,s he should pay that much money if not more. Election fraud is a terrible thing. What happened here is not clear. What is clear, Pennsylvania’s rules for Third Party candidates are extremely unfair and not democratic.

Infield explained the terrible rules in the Key Stone State, “...major-party candidates needed only 2,000 voter signatures to get on the ballot. But a minor-party candidate, such as Romanelli, has to meet a much higher standard of electoral credibility… The candidate has to obtain a number of signatures equal to 2 percent of the votes received by the most popular candidate in the last statewide election… Romanelli needed to obtain a record 60,070 signatures.”

Once you get to that high number there are still problems. “If you're registered as Abraham Lincoln but sign as Abe Lincoln, your signature can be ruled out. The name has to be the same as on the registration form,” Infield explained.

This registration issue should be a major rallying cry and uniting forces of all Third Parties, independents and Tea Party activists.

Ballot access battle could go to NC Supreme court…

An associated press article posted on WBTV.com says North Carolina’s strict ballot access rules may be challenged in the state’s supreme court.

Lawyers for the Libertarian and Green parties lost the appeal. But the article reads, “A lawsuit challenging requirements for third parties to get on North Carolina ballots likely will be heard again after a split decision by the state Court of Appeals… The 2-1 decision means the state Supreme Court would take the case if attorneys for the Libertarian and Green parties asked them to do so.”

The parties in North Carolina have to collect nearly 70,000 signatures to get on the ballot. If a candidate failed to receive 2% of the vote, the petition process starts over again.

Roundup: Early debate for Illinois Governor…

The election for Illinois next governor is not until 2010, but a group of six candidates gathered Friday to talk about their proposed policies. The debate was organized by the Free & Equal Elections Foundation. Codell Rodriguez of the TheSouthern.com wrote about the debate. Rodrigues wrote that, “All of the candidates agreed that Springfield isn't working right.” Here are highlights from the independent and third party candidates.

Green Party candidate Rich Whitney of Carbondale was quoted saying, “We've had year after year of smoke and mirrors." The article said Whitney focused on “overhauling the tax system to be more progressive” and education issues.

Independent Michael White of Lindenhurstand, said it is important to keep jobs and businesses in Illinois. He was quoted saying, "We have to get spending under control, no doubt about it."

Constitution Party candidate Randall Stufflebeam of Belleville, said accountability is the key thing missing in government. He said the government needs to be not be afraid of being accountable and pointed to a merit-based pay structure for teachers instead of tenure as once place that accountability could happen.

We do congratulate Republicans Adam Andrzejewski of Hinsdale and Dan Proft of Wheaton, and Democrat Bill "Dock" Walls of Chicago to be willing to sit next to these independent and third party candidates.

The news release, “urged widespread demonstrations against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to take place in Oslo, Washington, and other cities on the day Mr. Obama picks up his prize…”

Greens argued President Obama's willingness to talk with other leaders was not enough to merit the Peace Prize. The National co-chair of the Green Party Craig Thorsen said, "Created a 'new climate in international politics'? This means that the Nobel Prize committee is giving President Obama an award for not being George W. Bush."
