Report: Split at the top of Massachusetts' United Independent Party

A report from the Massachusetts State House News Service says two running mates whose campaign produced a new political party, the United Independent Party, have parted ways.

Andy Metzger reports Evan Falchuk, who garnered 3.3% of the November 2014 vote for governor, is no longer working with his running mate Angus Jennings.

Jennings suggested in the report that party has become more about Falchuk than the cause.

Falchuk said the party has been holding regular organizing meetings, has registered 2,300 members, and will have candidates for local office.

Independent poised to be on ballot to replace Ted Kennedy…

Independent Libertarian Joe Kennedy is poised to be on ballot to replace the late Senator Ted Kennedy. Kennedy, a member of the Libertarian Party, is running as an independent because Massachusetts state law makes it cheaper to run as an independent versus a party-backed candidate.

Kennedy says on his website, “Our original goal was 13,500 signatures / 10,200 validated signatures. Not only did we exceed both goals but we BLEW THEM AWAY… I want to thank everyone for their efforts and urge you more than ever to spread the word.”

Candidates needed to get 10,000 signatures to qualify. The primary election for the race is December 8, 2009 with the general election on January 19, 2010.

Cook Political: Third Parties making a difference…

Third Parties are making a difference in New England according to an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal. Jennifer Duffy from the Cook Political Report writes on WSJ.com, “Third-party candidates rarely win elections. So what does it say about the deep blue states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island that they now have credible independents running for governor next year?”

Duffy writes that because of Democratic dominance in New England the opportunity has arisen, the opening is there for a third party or independent candidate to take the wind from the Democrat.

Duffy points out that in Massachusetts, state Treasurer Tim Cahill now has more than six times the amount of money that incumbent Democratic Governor Deval Patrick has in his bank account the end of the last quarter. Cahill was a Democrat, but resigned to run as an independent. She continues to write about former Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee who is running for Governor in Rhode Island as an independent, recent polls show him getting about one third of the vote.

Duffy argued that the rise of Chafee and Cahill mostly depends upon their personality and winning disaffected voters.

Independent polling at mid-20% in race for Massachusetts Governor…

Independent candidate Tim Cahill is polling in the mid-20% in race for Massachusetts Governor. In a race versus incumbent Governor Deval Patrick, independent Tim Cahill is coming in second place polling at 28% and 25% depending upon which Republican is in the race. In all match-ups 14% are still undecided.

Cahill is the State Treasurer. He was elected to the office as a Democrat, but resigned from the Democratic Party a few months ago.

Libertarians endorse independent for Senate…

Libertarians endorse independent Joe Kennedy for Senate to take over the late Senator Ted Kennedy’s seat. Kennedy, who has no relation to the family of Senator Kennedy, is now officially backed by the Libertarian Association of Massachusetts.

Kennedy is actually on the Libertarian Association of Massachusetts State Committee. He made the decision to run as an independent because it is more costly to run as a third party candidate, such as a libertarian, than run as an independent.

Independent a strong second for Massachusetts Governor…

Independent Tim Cahill is polling a strong second for Massachusetts Governor. A new WHDH / Suffolk University poll shows State Treasurer Tim Cahill at 26%, putting him in second place for the race for Massachusetts top office. Polls with various Republicans have about 20% of the voters still undecided.

The big story of the poll is that 42% of people approve of Governor Duval Patrick’s job of Governor, but at best only 38% of respondents said they would vote for Governor Patrick’s re-election. That means four percent of people who like Patrick still will not vote for him.

Independent Gubernatorial candidate says no thanks to major party invitation…

Independent Massachusetts Gubernatorial Tim Cahill says no thanks to major party invitation. Cahill said he rejected the offer to drop his campaign and become the running-mate of Republican Charles Baker.

Andrea Estes wriets on Boston.com Cahill had been contacted by multiple people connected to Baker. Cahill was quoted saying, “I feel like I have every bit as much right to run for the top job as (Baker) does… And I would hope people would respect that.’’

Estes later writes, “A spokesman for Baker said that no one from the campaign had made a formal offer to Cahill.”

Independent for Massachusetts Governor looking good…

Independent for Massachusetts Governor looking good according to polls. A Rasmussen Reports poll of Likely voters shows current Governor Duval Patrick is leading in current polling with 34%. But, there is a two-way tie for second place with the Republican candidate and former Democrat now running as independent state Treasurer Tim Cahill. Treasurer Cahill got 23% of the vote.

The Republican candidate will like be either Charlie Baker or 2006 independent candidate Christy Mihos, their polling results in the election were stastically equal.

The great news of the poll for Treasure Cahill is that he is the leader in the Favorable ratings. He had a 49-25 rating. That puts Treasure Cahill with the highest favorable rating, but also the lowest unfavorable rating. That means if the people who have no opinion of Cahill break evenly he will have a 62% favorable rating, and a likely win in the 2010 election.

One month for independent candidates to file for Massachusetts special election…

There is one month for independent candidates to file for Massachusetts special election for U.S. Senator to replace the late Ted Kennedy. “Non-Party” candidates have until November 24th at 5:00pm to file for the election.

If you are running on a party ticket you had to file by October 20th. The partisan primary election day is December 8, 2009, with the general election about one month later on January 19, 2010.

Only Democrats, Republican and Libertarian are considered to be “parties” in the Bay State.

Independent candidate for Massachusetts Governor starts to define himself according to an article posted on PatriotLedger.com written by Jon Chesto. Chesto writes Tim Cahill is trying to define himself as, “A former entrepreneur who understands the needs of small businesses. A fiscal conservative who sounded the warning of a pending crash in state revenues. A steely administrator who is willing to make the tough decisions”

Cahill is the Massachusetts State Treasurer. He spoke at South Shore Chamber of Commerce breakfast. Chesto wrote, “Cahill touched on most of these elements before, including his concern that a significant portion of the state’s current spending level relies on the state’s diminished rainy day fund and short-term federal stimulus funds.”

Cahill who was elected to the Massachusetts State Treasurer’s office as a Democrat is running for Governor as an independent candidate.

Independent candidate for Governor of Massachusetts has the most money in the bank according to an article on Boston.com.

The article starts saying Republican Charles D. Baker, “raised more than $540,000.” But, the highlight is that State Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill, who is running as an independent, “raised $223,000 in September… (but) by far (has) the most money in the bank, more than $3 million…”

The story also said incumbent Democrat Governor Deval Patrick “raised more than $600,000 in 2009.”

Libertarian gets notice in Massachusetts Senate race, mostly because of his name. An article posted on BostonHearld.com gives six paragraphs to Independent Senate Candidate Joe Kennedy.

Kennedy, who is not related to the late-Senator, is getting attention because of his name.

The article describes Kennedy as, “…the choice for voters fed up with wealthy Democrats and Republicans fighting with each other, while ignoring the common folk who put them in power.”

He’s not popular, but still too many people like him…

He’s not popular, but still too many people like him to have Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick out of office. That the analysis from a new “7News-Suffolk University” poll. The problem revolves around independent candidate Tim Cahill.

The poll shows Governor Patrick only having a core vote of “35-40%”. But that remaining 60% is splitting between Cahill, the Republican and some people that will still vote for Governor Patrick.

State Treasurer Cahill, who quit the Democratic Party to run as an independent, comes in second in the poll. The "7News-Suffolk University" poll shows Governor Patrick receiving 36% of the vote. The vote slightly changes depending up on the Republican candidate. Cahill gets 24% or 23% and the undecideds are at 26% or 23%. A strong majority of the undecideds would have to go for Cahill to get the win.

But, the poll dug deeper and did find some positive news for Cahill. Cahill was the second choice for people that picked the Democrat and the Republican. So if either of the major party candidates slide in support, Cahill is poised to become Governor.

A Kennedy running to replace Ted Kennedy, Joe Kennedy is running. No, he’s not that Joe Kennedy.

Candidate Kennedy writes on his website, “I claim no relation to the family or relatives of President John F. Kennedy.” He continues, “Only with Joseph P Kennedy's validation that he is not going to run would I even consider my own candidacy for office.”

So, is this Kennedy a liberal? No. He said, “you will find that my views are closely aligned with the Libertarian party.” Kennedy is running for the office as an Independent candidate.

State Treasurer leaves his political party… in Massachusetts.

Treasurer Tim Cahill dropped his Democrat moniker for the independent title. A story posted on NECN.com reads, “Speculation has been that Cahill left the Democratic Party to position himself for a gubernatorial run in 2010.”

Cahill admitted going independent is not easy. The article continued with Cahil saying he doesn't have the infrastructure to run for office right now but he believes. “there is a path to victory as an independent.”

The question is what office will Cahill run for in 2010? Wayne Woodlief in the Boston Herald says, “Ex-state and national Democratic chairman Steve Grossman announced that he’ll seek the nomination for treasurer next year even if Cahill opts for re-election.”

It is likely Cahill’s move is to position himself for 2010 run. But for what office?
